Tijuana Mixology + Gastro Tour

52 Kool

Don Luqueño

Tras/Horizonte

DESCRIPTION

Brand new restaurant 52 Kool has only been open for a couple months but is already gaining quite a reputation because of its culinary vision. Oswaldo Flores Laguna from Creta, a Greek food truck in the famous Telefonica Gastro Park, is creating some very interesting dishes. The restaurant is also being known for having a great wine list and a really good cocktail program.

Don  Luqueño is kind of like a little secret spot where you can order some Mezcal forward cocktails. The guys from La Corriente Cevicheria Nais are behind this intimate and cozy casual Mezcal bar.

Tras/Horizonte is the new concept from the guys who created Tacos Kokopelli. The tacos from these guys have paved the way for the culinary revolution for which Tijuana is know for.  They recently created a new menu and added a mixology program which I am a big fan of.

COST: $130 Includes round trip transportation, 3 course meal at 52 Kool+ your choice of glass of wine or a signature hand crafted cocktail, snacks+signature cocktail at Don Luqueño, choice of 3 gourmet tacos+house made cocktail

Tijuana Craft Beer+Pizza

One of our favorite breweries from Tijuana is celebrating their two year anniversary next month and we will be there to show our support. Paralelo 28 has been busy these past two years brewing several styles of beers for the local people who visit their nano brewery in Plaza Fiesta, which  is the epicenter for numerous Baja California craft beer tasting rooms. To celebrate their second anny Paralelo is brewing a IIPA that will be released on that day we'll be visiting them.

The same owners of Paralelo have recently opened Napolito, a Mexican rendition of pizza from  Naples with craft beer on which just so happens to be located right next door to Paralelo. We'll be ordering up some of their specialty pies.

Bierhalle is one of the newest craft beer bars in town with 24 taps, 12 of which are from Baja and the other half from the U.S. The cool designed biergarten is very inviting for a pint or two.

Cost: $75 includes round trip transportation from San Diego, round of beers at Bierhalle, pizza and salad at Napolito, flight of beers at Paralelo.

Pick up: 12 pm at Fall Brewing Company (4542 30th street) with an expected return by 8pm.

Valle De Guadalupe Wine Tasting+Gourmet Coursed Lunch Pairing

Valle de Guadalupe, Baja's burgeoning wine country, is garnering so much attention right now, and rightfully so. With over 100 wineries and various chefs that are being recognized for their culinary talents at a worldwide level it's hard not to keep wanting to go back on a regular basis to try new places. Or revisit favorites.

This month we visit Nomada Cocina Itinerante, a roving restaurant in its fourth season of operation. Nomada only opens five months out of the year and moves around to a different winery each season. The menu changes every year and they only use local and sustainable ingredients.  The winery they have chosen for this season is Nativo, an up and coming winery tucked away in the foothills of San Antonio de Las Minas. You will get the opportunity to meet winemaker while he guides the group through the vineyard and walks you down in to the wine cave for a barrel tasting. Followed by a five course meal and wine paired lunch al fresco.  The menu for this lunch is prepared exclusively for Let's Go Clandestino.

After everyone's heart is content with the amazing meal and wine at Nativo we move on to our final tasting of the day. Vinisterra Vitivinicola are happy to receive our group and offer us a guided tour of the property and vineyard as well as a visit to their barrel room. You will enjoy a lovely wine tasting with some of their award winning wines . Vinisterra believes in caring for their own grapes, so all the grapes used for their production come from the properties' vineyard and another vineyard they have located in the valley of Santo Tomas. Having started their project in the year 2000 they now produce about seven thousand cases of wine a year.

Cost: $125 includes round trip transportation from San Diego, exclusive five course  Let's Go Clandestino menu+five wine pairings, meet the winemaker at Nativo+visit to the cave for a barrel tasting, guided visit throughout the vineyard and barrel room+wine tasting at Vinisterra Vitinicola, knowledgeable and bilingual tour guide.

Tortas+Dives+Craft Beer

Our next monthly tour will be visiting some of our favorite dive bars, something we haven't done in a while. You may have heard of the dive bar Dandy del Sur, but have you ever been to Nelson Bar or Bar Zacazonapan... Well now is your chance to check out these two bohemian watering holes.

Really excited to revisit Mecanica Cervecera, a very small production craft brewery whose beer is ready to hit the market this year. So you will get an insiders tasting before these beers are released to the public.

Tortas El Turco started proudly serving tortas de lomo  (pork shoulder Mexican style sandwiches) since 1947, after a 30 year absence they returned to serve the original lomo tortas in 2012. There is a reason why they have returned. Our other torta spot is not only known for their delicious tacos but also for their tortas, El Taconazo.

Pick up and drop off at: 12pm at Fall Brewing Co. (4542 30th street) returning around 8pm

Cost: $75

Includes: Round trip transportation from San Diego, torta at El Turco, craft beer tasting at Mecanica Cervecera, beers at 2 dive bars, torta at Taconazo.

MUELLE TRES+CERVECERIA WENDLANDT

MUELLE TRES, MEANING PIER THREE, IS ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS  IN ENSENADA AND IT JUST HAPPENS TO BE STRATEGICALLY LOCATED NEXT TO ONE OF THE LARGEST SHELLFISH PROCESSING PLANTS IN ALL OF BAJA CALIFORNIA. THE LOCAL SEAFOOD MARKET A.K.A "MERCADO NEGRO"  IS A FEW STEPS AWAY FROM THIS HIDDEN GEM. YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW FRESH AND HOW GOOD THE QUALITY OF THE DISHES AT MUELLE TRES ARE. OWNER DAVID MARTINEZ OPENED MUELLE TRES IN 2007 ALONG WITH HIS BROTHER JAVI MARTINEZ (OWNER OF BOULES) AND CO-CREATED THE MENU WITH THE HELP OF BENITO MOLINA (MANZANILLA/SILVESTRE). DAVID WAS KIND ENOUGH TO RESERVE A TABLE FOR TWENTY LUCKY PATRONS FOR THIS OCCASION.

CERVECERIA WENDLANDT IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE BREWERIES SOUTH OF THE BORDER. THEY MAKE EXCELLENT BEER AND BREW AT A FACILITY WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE TO THE OCEAN. WENDLANDT ALSO HAS A REALLY COOL BREWPUB LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN ENSENADA. ALTHOUGH YOU CAN FIND SOME OF THEIR BEERS IN CALIFORNIA IT IS TRULY A GREAT EXPERIENCE TO VISIT THE BREWERY AND MEETING THE OWNER EUGENIO IS PART OF IT. THIS BREWERY IS CONSTANTLY WINNING AWARDS IN MEXICO AND DOING COOL COLLABORATION BREWS WITH BREWERIES FROM SAN DIEGO SUCH AS MONKEY, PIZZA PORT AND ALPINE.

TAQUERIA EL TRAILERO, "THE SEMI-TRUCK DRIVER," IS A STAPLE OF ENSENADAS' STREET FOOD VENDORS. THEY SERVE SOME OF THE BEST CHORIZO AND ADOBADA TACOS I HAVE EVER TRIED. THEY ALSO OFFER VAMPIROS AND HUARACHES WHICH IS ALWAYS A PLUS.

COST 100$

INCLUDES:

ROUND TRIP TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM SAN DIEGO+MEZCAL ON BOARD+PREFIX MARISCOS LUNCH AT MUELLE TRES W/A BEER+TACOS AT TAQUERIA EL TRAILERO

ROSARITO AND PLAYAS TOUR

SUMMERTIME IS HERE AND WE WILL BE HOSTING A FEW TOURS THAT WILL BE HGIGHLIGHTING SOME COASTAL LOCATIONS, AS WELL AS SOME BEACH TIME.  OUR FIRST SUMMER TOUR SERIES WILL BE HEADING TO ROSARITO, A BEACH TOWN THAT ONCE USED TO BE THE GO TO BAJA VACATION DESTINATION IN THE 90'S BUT HAS RECENTLY BEEN GETTING MORE AND MORE VISITORS EACH YEAR.

EL NIDO IS A CLASSIC RESTAURANT THAT HAS BEEN SERVING TRADITIONAL MEXICAN FARE IN ROSARITO SINCE 1971. THE DECOR OF THIS PLACE MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE WALKING IN TO A MEXICAN WESTERN HOUSE, YOU CAN SEE BRICK AND WOODWORK THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. OH AND THERES A WALL OF COW SKULLS.  THERE ARE MULTIPLE BRICK OVENS IN WHICH THEY COOK THEIR HANDMADE FLOUR TORTILLAS AND MEATS. FRESH QUESO PANELA, SLOW ROASTED LAMB AND VENISON MACHACA ARE SOME OF THEIR SPECIALTIES. A WINE CAVE IS HIDDEN UNDERNEATH THE RESTAURANT FOR INTIMATE TASTINGS.

PLAYAS DE TIJUANA IS THE BEACH NEIGHBORHOOD LOCATED RIGHT NEXT TO THE BORDER FENCE THAT STRECTHES ALL THE WAY INTO THE OCEAN AND DIVIDES IMPERIAL BEACH AND PLAYAS.  HERE YOU CAN ALSO FIND SOME HIDDEN GEMS FOR CRAFT BEER AND FOOD. PETANQUERO BISTRO IS A NEW SPOT THAT HAS BURROS AS THEIR SPECIALTY. IT IS A GREAT SPACE DESIGNED BY BRAU AND LIZ WHO HAVE ADDED A COURT OF PÉTANQUE AS PART OF THEIR ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT AND VIBE. SO WE GET TO HERE AND DRINK SOME CRAFT BEER, MAYBE A HOUSE MADE SANGRIA WHILE PLAYING A GAME OF PÉTANQUE.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN TO TACOS EL FRANC IN TIJUANA KNOW HOW GOOD THEIR TACOS ARE. HOWEVER, SOME PEOPLE CLAIM THAT THE ORIGINAL TACOS EL FRANCES  LOCATION IN PLAYAS MIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT BETTER. EITHER WAY REST ASSURED THESE WILL BE SOME OF THE BEST TACOS YOU'VE EVER HAD.

COST: $83 INCLUDES ROUND TRIP TRANSPORTATION FROM SAN DIEGO, TRADITIONAL MEXICAN LUNCH AT EL NIDO (QUESO PANELA, BEEF/CHICKEN TACO, FLAUTA, RICE+BEANS, GUACAMOLE AND FLOUR TORTILLAS), CRAFT BEER OR SANGRIA AT PETANQUERO BISTRO, 3 TACOS OF YOUR CHOICE AT EL FRANCES, MEZCAL AND BEER ON THE BUS
